Receiving Love

Love is the root of every spiritual growth, and as Christians, our first step to tapping into the great gifts God has for us is to be transformed by receiving God’s love in our hearts and in our minds, to the point where there is less resistance in us when it comes to doing the Lord’s work or being with Him in prayer. (1 Cor 13)

You may not always see it that way. You may think it’s because you lack discipline or you don’t have faith, but it could simply be that you haven’t fully accepted the love of God the Father in your heart. There are many things that hinder this, and they are often deeply rooted in our traumas.

I often struggled to trust God, even though I heard His voice and saw Him speak to me through visions and dreams, and even though I had a track record that proved His faithfulness. I still didn’t fully trust Him. It sounds odd, but for someone who had dealt for many years with parental disappointment, I learned to take charge of my own life. So when God revealed Himself boldly to me through the Holy Spirit, I was hesitant because I didn’t want another situation of failure—one where I would be humiliated, abandoned, and left to pick myself up again. Subconsciously, I was operating on autopilot in self-defense.

Despite this, the Lord still showed me His love and favor. It wasn’t until I really started praying and asking God to reveal to me why I struggled to trust, and asked for His supernatural healing, that things shifted. From there, I was healed. I forgave my parents, prayed for them, and asked the Lord to give me the strength to move on.

You can’t always turn your parents into perfect parents, but with God our Father, it is never too late to relive a new childhood—because to Him, we will always be His children. As I prayed, I felt peace.

To accept God’s love is to move with inner peace and a sense of rest in your spirit. Love is the base of all gifts. If you want to do the Lord’s work and change lives, love has to be the foundation—and who better to teach you about love than God Himself through the Holy Spirit?

Accepting God’s love demonstrates your trust in Him. It shows that you have faith that what He says He will do, He will do. When you don’t trust Him, you won’t yield to His voice or obey His ways, because they can feel too heavy or oppressive—when in reality, they are meant to protect you and give you freedom to fully be yourself.

When you accept God’s love, it gives you the space to be yourself—the good and positive side of you that was buried under tears and heartbreak. In Him, we find everything we need, which is why Psalm 23 perfectly summarizes what God’s love does for us. It shows that when we accept God’s love, He protects us, gives us peace and joy, leads us on the right paths, elevates us, and dwells with us forever.

Accepting God’s love is not by your own strength. You can’t just wake up and decide to love God through actions alone and expect transformation. That may look like good performance to people, but God is not impressed by what we do—He expects obedience, but He is moved by our hearts.

It is through prayer, worship, and humbly asking the Holy Spirit to reveal what is hindering you from accepting God’s love—and allowing Him to detach you from it, even when you want to hold onto it. For me, it was unforgiveness. For others, it may be a person or an attachment. The root is often childhood trauma, and God has the supernatural capacity to give you peace and strength to move on—if you believe and pray in faith.

There is nothing God our Father would not do for us. He loves us and wants the best for us. I hope you don’t resist the Holy Spirit based on your own understanding, but instead yield to His promptings and trust that the Word of the Lord in you will bear fruit around you.

Study and pray Psalm 23.
